The Mission of STEM-SMART

Increase the number of U.S students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Degree programs and build a strong and vibrant STEM Workforce

What is STEM-SMART?

STEM-SMART is a web portal that connects U.S. high school and college students with universities and businesses and encourages students from all backgrounds to pursue STEM degrees and internships and launch successful science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. For the United States to remain a global leader, its workforce must leverage both established and emerging STEM disciplines and this active learning and mentoring community is dedicated solely to strengthen the pipeline of STEM students and scientists in the United States. This ambitious vision can only be achieved through intimate and active collaboration among all stakeholders, including students, universities and businesses. STEM.SMART has four primary goals:

  • 1.Assist U.S students to learn, apply, and gain admission to exciting STEM degree programs at US institutions of higher learning;
  • 2.Partner with U.S universities to engage, guide, and mentor students to enroll in the right STEM program that aligns with their academic profiles and career goals;
  • 3.Interface and partner with U.S. corporations to educate and prepare U.S students for emerging STEM careers through internships and other meaningful work experiences.
  • 4.Collaborate with government agencies, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), and other non-profit organizations, that have a commitment to the advancement of STEM, particularly for women and minorities.

Students complete a free and detailed profile which is then accessible to STEM-SMART universities and corporate partners. STEM-SMART partners can also promote themselves to students through an engaging micro-site on the portal and engage with students through an online forum.

STEM-SMART was supported by the Research Foundation of the State University of New York and IECA Foundation. We are grateful to both organizations for their support..
